BW Energy Reports 8–9 mbbl Gross at Gabon's Dussafu
BW Energy says two Dussafu appraisal wells point to about 8–9 million barrels gross. The figures are the operator's estimates.
BW Energy's Dussafu appraisal result is a small addition to non-Gulf crude supply: the operator reports about 8–9 million barrels gross recoverable from two wells off Gabon. Offshore Technology relays the figures, and we located no regulator filing. Treat them as BW Energy estimates, not booked reserves.
The Gulf Barrel Desk · 3 min read- BW Energy reports a combined gross recovery of about 8–9 million barrels from two Dussafu appraisal wells, per Offshore Technology's 16 October 2026 report.
- The 10P2 well found a 30 m oil column and is credited with 6 million barrels of incremental gross recovery; 10P1 found a 16 m column in a separate accumulation.
- A 10P2 production well is forecast to start above 5,000 bopd gross, with payback in under a year. That is a company forecast, not a result.
- Ownership is BW Energy 73.5%, Panoro Energy 17.5% and Gabon Oil Company 9%, so net volumes are smaller than the gross figures.
- We found no regulator or exchange filing confirming the numbers, so they remain operator estimates. This is analysis, not trading advice.
BW Energy says appraisal drilling on the Dussafu licence offshore Gabon has found commercial oil, with combined gross recovery estimated at about 8–9 million barrels, according to Offshore Technology's report dated 16 October 2026. The volumes are modest and the economics described are quick. Every figure here originates with the operator; we searched for a regulator or exchange filing and did not find one, so the numbers are unconfirmed estimates.
What the two wells found
The 10P2 appraisal well found a 30 m oil column in the Gamba reservoir, at a structural level matching pre-drill forecasts, per Offshore Technology. Wireline logging and pressure testing were reported to show good porosity and permeability. The 10P1 well intersected a 16 m column in a separate accumulation with moveable oil. Column thickness is a measured result; the 6 million barrels of incremental gross recovery credited to 10P2 is a management estimate.
The payback claim is a forecast
BW Energy expects a future 10P2 production well to start above 5,000 barrels of oil per day gross, similar to MaBoMo phase one wells, with payback in under a year, per Offshore Technology. That is a forecast, not a result. The report does not disclose capital cost, oil-price assumptions or decline rates, so the payback figure cannot be tested. Nothing is producing from these locations yet.
Gross barrels are not BW Energy's barrels
Dussafu is held 73.5% by BW Energy, 17.5% by Panoro Energy and 9% by Gabon Oil Company, per Offshore Technology. Applying those percentages to 8–9 million gross barrels gives roughly 6 million barrels for BW Energy; that is our own simple equity calculation, not a company figure, and it ignores royalties, taxes and any government share. Anyone comparing the find with company reserves should convert to net volumes first.
How this compares with earlier Dussafu appraisals
Scale matters. BW Energy's November 2023 release on the Hibiscus South appraisal estimated gross recoverable reserves of 6 to 7 million barrels, per BW Group. The new 8–9 million barrel estimate is of a similar order. Dussafu's pattern, as the operator reports it, is incremental satellite additions near existing infrastructure rather than large discoveries, so each result moves supply at the margin.
What the company says comes next
Per Offshore Technology, BW Energy plans four MaBoMo phase two production wells plus one at the 10P2 location, each expected to start near 5,000 bopd gross, with sequential start-up reaching a peak of 20,000 bopd gross. Bourdon phase one first oil is planned for the first quarter of 2028, and the company cites a long-term gross target of 30,000–45,000 bopd for Dussafu. All are company plans. Watch for formal reserves booking and well sanction. This is analysis of reported operator data, not trading advice.
- How much oil did BW Energy report from the Dussafu appraisal wells?
- BW Energy estimates a combined gross recovery of about 8–9 million barrels from the 10P2 and 10P1 appraisal wells, with 6 million barrels of incremental gross recovery credited to 10P2, per Offshore Technology on 16 October 2026. These are operator estimates, not audited reserves.
- Does this change the global supply picture?
- Not on the evidence available. The volumes are small, and the report does not give a production schedule for the new wells beyond a possible 5,000 bopd gross start-up for a 10P2 well. Dussafu is better read as a maintenance-of-plateau story than a supply shock.
- Who shares in the Dussafu volumes?
- BW Energy holds 73.5% and operates, Panoro Energy holds 17.5% and Gabon Oil Company holds 9%, per Offshore Technology. Gross figures must be scaled to each partner's interest, before any royalties or government take.
