Oil India's KG Basin gas test: a flow rate, not reserves

Oil India reports gas and condensate flows from an unappraised zone in Godavari-1. No resource estimate or timeline has been reported.

Oil India's Godavari-1 well flowed up to 200,000 standard cubic metres of gas a day from the Matsyapuri Formation, but that is a test rate, not a reserves figure. Reports of the company's disclosure give no resource estimate or development timeline, so the find is announced, not yet sized or financed.

The Gulf Barrel Desk · 3 min read

Oil India has reported gas and condensate flows from its Godavari-1 appraisal well in the shallow offshore block KG-DSF/GSKW/2018, in the Krishna-Godavari Basin. Offshore Technology, in an article dated 26 October 2026, says production testing began on 16 October 2026 and gas reached up to 200,000 standard cubic metres per day. That is a meaningful test result. It is not a reserves number, and neither report gives one. We did not find the company's original filing, so these figures are as reported by trade press.

What the well reportedly flowed

Offshore Technology reports a tested interval of 2,024 to 2,027 metres, gas at up to 200,000 standard cubic metres per day during continuous testing, condensate at about 170 barrels per day and wellhead pressure of 1,815 psi. These are test-stage figures from a short interval. They suggest the zone holds hydrocarbons and flows, but they say nothing about decline rates or recoverable volumes.

Why an unappraised formation matters

Both outlets describe the Matsyapuri Formation as previously unappraised, which makes the result new geological information rather than confirmation of a known pool. OE Digital reports that testing of higher zones in the same well is being prepared. If those zones also flow, the block could hold stacked pay; if they do not, the find may remain a single interval.

Announced, not yet sized or financed

Neither report cites a resource estimate, a commercial-viability statement or a first-gas date. Between a test flow and production sit volumetric appraisal, a field development plan, infrastructure tie-in and a final investment decision. Until Oil India publishes any of those, the discovery is best read as exploration success, not a change in India's gas supply outlook.

How this connects to the gas and LNG picture

This is an Indian domestic find and sits outside the Gulf. Its relevance to the wider gas and LNG market is indirect: any domestic gas that reaches production would displace some imported supply, but a test rate of this kind cannot be sized against import volumes. We make no such comparison, because no volume that would support one has been reported.

What to watch next

Watch for results from the higher-zone tests in Godavari-1, any resource range Oil India files or announces, and whether further appraisal wells follow. Treat all figures here as reported and provisional until the company's own disclosure is available. This piece is analysis, not trading or investment advice.

How much gas did the Godavari-1 well flow?
Offshore Technology, in an article dated 26 October 2026, reports up to 200,000 standard cubic metres per day of gas and about 170 barrels per day of condensate, with testing starting on 16 October 2026. These are reported test rates, not reserves or sustained production.
Is this a commercial discovery?
Not on the evidence reported. Neither Offshore Technology nor OE Digital cites a resource estimate, commercial-viability statement or development timeline. OE Digital reports that testing of higher zones in the well is being prepared.
Where do these figures come from?
From two trade-press reports of Oil India's disclosure. We did not find the company's own filing, so the figures are unverified against a primary document and could change as the company publishes more.
