Cheniere's 22-Year Petrobras LNG Contract Adds a Second

Cheniere Marketing will sell Petrobras about 0.8 MMtpa of LNG on a free-on-board basis for 22 years. Rigzone reports that Petrobras separately contracted the same volume from Sempra on 14 September 2026, so the Brazilian buyer now holds two long-dated US contracts.

Cheniere Marketing's 22-year, 0.8 MMtpa free-on-board LNG contract with Petrobras is modest in volume but long in tenor, and Rigzone reports it follows a 20-year Sempra deal with the same buyer. It is a commitment, not a moved cargo: price and start date are undisclosed. This is analysis, not trading advice.

Cheniere Marketing has signed a 22-year LNG supply agreement with Petrobras, and Rigzone reports that the Brazilian state-controlled company had already contracted the same volume from Sempra on 14 September 2026. The volume is small by global LNG standards, but the tenor is long. This is analysis of reported terms, not a trading view.

What the contract says

Cheniere's release, dated 29 September 2026, says Cheniere Marketing, LLC will supply Petrobras about 0.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG on a free-on-board basis for 22 years. Rigzone published its report on 30 September 2026. Over the full term the volume implies roughly 17.6 million tonnes, which is our own multiplication and not a figure either party has stated. The release does not name the supplying facility, the price formula or a first-delivery date.

Why a state buyer wants fixed supply

Rigzone quotes Petrobras as saying that contracting long-term volumes reflects its strategy to reduce exposure to spot-market volatility and to strengthen risk management of its gas portfolio. Cheniere's release carries no Petrobras statement, so we treat this as reported, not independently confirmed. Free-on-board terms mean the buyer arranges shipping, leaving freight and delivery logistics with Petrobras. Cheniere gains contracted revenue; Petrobras gains a price and supply anchor.

How it fits with Sempra and Cheniere's growth

Rigzone reports that Petrobras also agreed to take 0.8 MMtpa from Sempra for 20 years, announced 14 September 2026 and supplied from Port Arthur LNG Phase 2, with commercial operations expected in 2030 and 2031. On those reported figures the two contracts total about 1.6 MMtpa. We reviewed no Sempra or Petrobras primary release, so the Sempra terms are second-hand. Cheniere's release does not tie this contract to a specific facility.

What Cheniere says it supports

In the release, chief executive Jack Fusco said the agreement reinforces Cheniere's position as a leading global LNG provider while providing additional commercial support and fixed-fee cash-flow visibility to underpin further brownfield liquefaction capacity growth. The release puts operating capacity at about 56 mtpa, with about 5 mtpa under construction. Rigzone adds that the Sabine Pass expansion final investment decision is expected by early 2027, pending FERC and DOE approvals.

What remains unknown

The origins reviewed do not disclose the price formula, the first-delivery date or the supplying facility, so the contract's economics cannot be judged. Watch for a delivery start date, a Petrobras or Sempra primary filing confirming the Sempra terms, and progress on the Sabine Pass approvals. Until cargoes load, this is a contractual commitment and not a moved barrel. It is analysis, not trading advice.

What are the main terms of the Cheniere-Petrobras LNG contract?
Per Cheniere's release of 29 September 2026, Cheniere Marketing will sell Petrobras about 0.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG on a free-on-board basis for 22 years. The release does not state a price formula, a start date or the supplying facility.
Why would Petrobras sign long-term LNG supply?
Rigzone quotes Petrobras as saying that contracting long-term volumes reflects its strategy to reduce exposure to spot-market volatility. Cheniere's own release contains no Petrobras statement, so the rationale is reported by a trade outlet, not confirmed in a primary document reviewed here.
How does the Sempra deal relate to this one?
Rigzone reports that Petrobras also agreed to buy 0.8 MMtpa for 20 years from Sempra, announced 14 September 2026 and supplied from Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 in Jefferson County, Texas. On those reported figures, the two contracts total about 1.6 MMtpa. No Sempra primary release was reviewed.
