BW Energy's $208m lease de-risks Gabon's Bourdon
A 12-year lease funds the Akoum wellhead platform and the revolver is extended to 2028. First oil is still scheduled for Q1 2028.
BW Energy has swapped bridge funding for a 12-year, $208m lease from Minsheng Financial Leasing covering the Akoum wellhead platform, and extended its DNB Bank revolver to August 2028. It is a financing de-risking step for Bourdon, whose first oil is scheduled for Q1 2028; it is not a production milestone. This is analysis, not advice.
The Gulf Barrel Desk · 3 min read- Minsheng Financial Leasing agreed a $208m project-level lease for the Akoum wellhead platform, covering 100% of its capital cost, per the Offshore Technology report of 13 October 2026.
- The lease runs 12 years: an initial fixed period of 8 years plus an option to extend by 4. Ownership passes to the licence at the end.
- BW Energy extended its $250m DNB Bank revolving credit facility by 18 months to August 2028, with existing terms unchanged.
- Bourdon reached final investment decision in May 2026. First oil is scheduled for Q1 2028, and the company targets more than 100,000 bopd in 2028, up from about 30,000 bopd in 2025.
- Financing is only one step. The platform conversion, drilling and first oil still have to be delivered, and the 2028 output target is a company projection.
BW Energy has replaced short-term funding for the Akoum wellhead platform with a $208m, 12-year lease from Minsheng Financial Leasing, and has extended its $250m DNB Bank revolver by 18 months to August 2028. The announcement was reported on 13 October 2026. It does not add a barrel. It lowers the funding risk on the Bourdon project offshore Gabon, where first oil is scheduled for Q1 2028. This is analysis, not advice.
What the lease actually finances
The lease covers 100% of the capital cost of the Akoum platform, a former rig being converted into a 12-slot wellhead platform in the Dussafu licence. The cost is shared among licence partners by participating interest, and BW Energy holds 73.5%. The term is eight fixed years with an option for four more. Ownership passes to the licence when the lease ends. In effect the platform is paid for out of future cash flow rather than up-front equity, according to the reported terms.
The revolver extension changes timing, not price
BW Energy exercised an option to extend its DNB Bank revolving credit facility by 18 months, moving maturity to August 2028 on unchanged terms. The facility is meant for field development and general corporate purposes. When it was announced in August 2025, drawn amounts were priced at Term SOFR plus 6% a year, with a 0.6% commitment fee on undrawn amounts. The extension buys liquidity through the period when Bourdon spending peaks and before first oil, which is scheduled for Q1 2028.
Bourdon moved quickly, but first oil is still a target
BW Energy reached final investment decision on Bourdon in May 2026, 14 months after discovery, according to CFO Thomas Young as reported by Offshore Technology. The company schedules first oil for Q1 2028 and expects output to rise from about 30,000 barrels of oil per day in 2025 to more than 100,000 in 2028. Those are company projections. Each depends on the platform conversion, installation and drilling being delivered on schedule.
What to watch next
The next verifiable markers are the Akoum conversion and installation progress, the start of Bourdon drilling, and whether the revolver is drawn as spending builds. Net proved plus probable reserves are reported above 240 million barrels of oil equivalent, with 390 million barrels classed as 2C resources, which are contingent and not yet reserves. Treat the 100,000 bopd figure as an announced ambition until production data from the licence confirms it.
